I was only 18 years old. I didn’t even know my caste until I gave NEET, that giant medical entrance exam where everything somehow suddenly depended on caste percentages. Before that, I thought everyone just competed on marks. I thought marks were the only thing that mattered — like the score in a computer game. When the results came out, I saw the merit list and… waited for my rank. And there it was — I scored higher than some people listed below me on the admission list. One of them was my rich SC friend who owns four BMWs with clearly lower marks than me. I stared at the screen. I blinked. Then I exploded. “How did he get a seat?!” I screamed into the void. My Wi-Fi buffer wheel stared back at me like a judge. I googled it and suddenly found out about reservation quotas — SC, ST, OBC, EWS — and how they actually work in practice. I had never really understood this before NEET. I just saw my name missing and someone else’s name present, and assumed it was unfair. I loved the idea of Pure Merit so much; I had all the internet threads and anti-reservation X posts saved in bookmarks. I’d recite them four times everyday , thanking the online algorithm for giving me the understanding of why reservation was unfair that I’d been given. “Merit is love,” I would say, “Merit is life”. My rich SC friend with four BMWs calls me a revisionist who’s soft on caste privileges. I knew he was brainwashed by ambedkarite deep state propaganda. I called him a quota apologist. But he started asking me why do upper castes who make up only 15% of india's population own disproportionately high amount of country's wealth, why are they over-represented in media, bureaucracy, politics, why are 77% high court judges UC when they only make 15% of country's population, why poverty is higher among lower castes and dalits, why are most dalits landless, why are most low level jobs like labourers, construction workers, agricultural workers, etc taken up by low caste people why are there no upper castes doing these jobs why? he tried to connect it to caste system telling me that india's caste system is still intact and that it is because of centuries of keeping lower castes relegated to degrading hard labour jobs like artisan work, labourers, manual scavenging, leather work, that they became most deprived sections of this country nd he tried to throw words like systemic disadvantage, he tried to explain me that upper castes have used their generational wealth, that they earned by exploiting hard labour of lower castes, and caste monopoly over politics, education, resources etc to keep lower castes down till this day But I did not fall for his pakistani propaganda, i knew the reason why upper castes are over represented in politics, bureaucracy and media and have so much generational wealth is because they have MERIT . The lower castes do not have merit and that is why they are backward. I’m crying now after getting bombarded with so much history lessons and social justice jargon, i cry over the death of merit and my face hurts. I lie in bed and it’s really cold. A warmth is moving towards me. I feel something touch me. It’s Anuradha. I’m so happy. She whispers in my ear, “General category people are most oppressed in the whole world.” She grabs me with her powerful Brahmin-genes hands, strong from flexing and posting about it on X, and puts me on my hands and knees. She penetrates my frail intellect with slogans about “One family, one reservation” and “general category pain.” She grunts a confusing grunt, as she doesn’t have time to deal with logic and nuance.
