If you care about actual learning and pushing the boundaries of science and technology then do phd or join research teams.

Rest it's all about products, products which are being targeted for companies or normies, sometimes services. All the research etc. is boils down to provide an abstraction layer which makes it easier for these.

Someone needs to work on utilize the research work.
